UNK Focused Visit: Self-Study Completed
(duplicated from the most recent version of the Assessment Newsletter)
On April 28-29, a team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) will visit UNK to evaluate our progress in assessment of student learning. In the 2004 NCA feedback report, the evaluation team indicated that the assessment process at UNK did not meet NCA requirements and should be revisited after four years to gauge progress toward creating a coherent and sustainable assessment process. Content for the self-study was written by the Director of eCampus, the Director of General Studies, and the Director of Assessment with input from individuals and groups on campus involved in assessment. A draft of the self-study was reviewed by a variety of stakeholders on campus including the SVCAASL, Deans, Faculty Senate, WI/CD committee, GS committee, and the Assessment committee.
The self-study includes chapters on each of the nine areas that NCA called out in their report from their 2004 visit. The document was sent to HLC at the end of February for their review and feedback before their visit in April. The self-study is available on the assessment website: (http://www.unk.edu/academicaffairs/assessment/index.php?id=31686).

The Reynolds Series Presents: Honoring the Sandhill Crane Migration Tribute Retreat
The Reynolds Series, in cooperation with several UNK and Kearney community associations, is hosting the “Honoring the Sandhill Crane Migration Tribute Retreat” on March 7-15. The purpose of the festival is to gather writers from around the world to consider the cranes in retreat in central Nebraska and share lectures and readings of previously published and newly written works. The diverse panel of writers includes six individuals indigenous to the Americas and one individual indigenous to China. They will discuss a variety of topics including the impact of migrations, diaspora, and seasonal travel for sustainability upon various peoples and animal/fowl/bird species.
The Rowe Sanctuary is providing films and interpretation to audiences, as well as birders to the writers for fly-ins and fly-outs during their retreat. Sponsorship of this event is extensive and includes the state arts council and humanities council, the Kearney Area Community Foundation, many local venues, and six areas of the university itself. All Reynolds Series events are open to all and are always free of charge to attendees. Everyone will find something of interest in this programming with eight days of uniquely styled events.
For a detailed schedule of events, visit the Reynolds Writers and Readers Series Website at http://www.unk.edu/acad/english/index.php?id=18214, and for more information, contact Allison Hedge Coke, Reynolds Chair at hedgecokeaa@unk.edu.
Library News: Digitized Resource Detailing First 75 Years of Institution's History Now Available
In 1980, our institution celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of its founding. For this Diamond Jubilee, veteran history professor Philip S. Holmgren was commissioned to compile a history of the first three-quarters of a century of Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney/Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney/Kearney State College. In the resulting book, Kearney State College, 1905-1980: A History of the First Seventy-Five Years, Dr. Holmgren laid out our history in some detail and the book has served for twenty-eight years as a valuable and heavily used resource for those interested in the early history of KSC/UNK.
Dr. Holmgren’s entire book is now available on the Internet. Library staff have scanned each page and mounted the digitized images on the Library’s website. These pages can be viewed, zoomed-in-on or copied free of any charge. To see Kearney State College, 1905-1980 online, go to the Library’s website at http://rosi.unk.edu and click on “UNK Archives” on the main screen. Then select the title from the Archives screen.
Campus Discussion of American Democracy Project (ADP) Continues
On February 13, 2008, Dr. Chapman Rackaway, Fort Hays State University presented at a Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) luncheon entitled “The Case for Engagement: Using the American Democracy Project to Build the Next Generation of Leaders.” Dr. Rackaway informed the audience about the American Democracy Project, a growing initiative on university campuses that is designed to encourage student engagement in civic activity. The ADP has recently been a common topic of discussion among the members of UNK’s faculty and administration, and Dr. Rackaway’s presentation includes an exploration of the benefits associated with the implementation of the program on a university campus. A podcast of this event is posted on the CTE weblog at http://www.lopers.net/weblog/cte/.
