Fiscal Year 2006 Report

F. Graduate Assistant Stipends.  $57,400.

  1. Title of the Project:  Stipends for Graduate Students in Selected Priority Programs

    Brief descriptive narrative
For fiscal year 2006, Programs of Excellence (POE) funding was allocated to provide Graduate Assistantship (GA) positions for some priority programs on the UNK campus. Seven positions were funded at $8200 each. Because this stipend is greater than the standard GA rate at UNK, it was decided to award these positions to second year graduate students who are directly involved in priority programs. This direct involvement includes lab or classroom instruction of undergraduate courses or working closely and collaboratively with students and faculty on research projects.

    Position allocation and assignments are:

    • Biology: Two positions. Teach Biology 103 labs and assist microbiology faculty with research. Number of students benefiting: 176.
    • Communication Disorders: One position. Lab assistant for CDIS 418, organize clinic screening activities. Number of students benefiting: 35.
    • Exercise Science: Two positions. Conduct and assist with research in the Human Performance Lab, supervise undergraduate labs, supervise Athletic Training undergraduates in clinical settings. Number of students benefiting: 150.

Measures of impact resulting from the Programs of Excellence funding

    • Additional extramural support acquired GA’s in Biology and Exercise Science are assigned to faculty who have received external funding and who have grant proposals currentlypending.
    • Publications Manuscripts for publication are expected in Biology, Exercise Science, and Teacher Education.
    • Presentations Presentations are also expected in the above disciplines.
    • Number of Students Benefited Total number of students benefiting from the seven GA positions is approximately 476.
    • Enhanced Services to the State The Program of Excellence Graduate Assistantship positions provide excellent service to the University and State through their contributions to undergraduate education and through their participation in faculty and student research. As the program continues into its second year and beyond, the enhanced services are expected to yield further benefits in student learning, faculty research and publication, and external grant funding.
