D.   Exercise Science: Human Performance Lab Coordinator. $25,000

    Accomplishments and goals:
    The half-time Lab Coordinator, Seth MacFarland, has coordinated exercise science majors doing field experience and internship in the Human Performance Lab as well as laboratory sections for PE 310, PE 461, PE 467, PE 468, and PE 469; ordered and maintained equipment and enhanced the operations of the Human Performance lab in general through coordination of overall efforts.

    Measures of impact resulting from POE funding:

    • Additional extramural funding acquired: With the assistance of the HPL Lab Coordinator, Dr. Kate Heelan, Director of the HPL has been able to focus more specifically on extramural funding and is completing the second year of an American Heart Association beginning grant-in-aid award and currently has three extramural requests pending. Two to the American Heart Association and one the NIH. The HPL Coordinator has made a tremendous impact on productivity for the HPL faculty.
    • Publications: Dr. Brown has had 2 publications and Dr. Heelan has had 4 publications accepted in the past year.
    • Presentations: In spring 2005 the HPL staff had nine presentations at the national American College of Sports Medicine Annual conference. In 2006, there will be 11 presentations at the annual meeting.
    • Educational Innovations: Laboratory experiences have significantly improved with the ability of the HPL Coordinator to assist with experiments providing a better student-to-instructor ratio.
    • Number of Students Benefited: 200
    • Enhanced Services to the State: The HPL Coordinator also assists with State-wide health promotions such as Nebraska On the Move, works with area schools for presentations and tours and reaches out to state-health departments.

    Expenditures: $25,000.
