Welcome to the Department of History
The Department of History emphasizes scholarly teaching as one of its highest priorities. The programs it offers are designed to train students in the use of historical methods to solve problems and to prepare students for careers in teaching and other professions such as law, business and public service. The Department also prepares students for graduate work in History and related disciplines.
The History Faculty endeavors to impart to students an understanding of the contemporary world through the perspectives of history, to make them aware of the cultural heritage of world populations, and to inculcate an appreciation of our heritage. Students learn the values of democratic government and the pluralistic nature of American society, embracing contributions from the diversity of groups within it. The Department seeks to cultivate intellectual curiosity, tolerance, and respect for the institutions and cultures of other peoples.
The Department offers four undergraduate degrees in History: the BA in History, the BS in History-Social Science, the BA in Education–History Subject Endorsement, and the BA in Education–Social Sciences Field Endorsement. The Department also offers the MA in History.
