Communication Disorders
Department Mission and Description
Consistent with the Mission of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, the primary purpose of the Department of
Communication Disorders is to provide a high quality instructional program in speech-language pathology. The
department, which is located in the College of Education, offers the Bachelor of Science in Education degree
and the Master of Science in Education degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The Master's program in
speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and
Speech-Language Pathology of the Americam Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
The Department's facilities in the College of Education include clinical treatment rooms which can be monitored
by faculty/staff from their offices, complete auditory testing facilities, speech and hearing science laboratories, an
assistive technology center, seminar and study rooms, and offices for faculty, staff, and graduate students. Our
faculty members strive to guarantee students a top quality, innovatiave and relevant education experience. While
excellent teaching is central to our mission, our faculty afford equal importance to clinical service and research.

Department Objectives
To provide a preprofessional undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders which prepares the student for
graduate studies in the field and offers clinical observation and an introduction to the clinical practicum experience.
To provide a specialized program at the graduate level which includes state of the art theoretical information and
intervention techniques. Technology is a strong component of this program with a comprehensive speech science lab.
To provide the sequence of courses and practicum experiences necessary to obtain licensure and/or become endorsed
as a speech-language pathologist upon completion of the Master's degree.
